The Bucket list: #12 - COMPLETED

I did it!!...what I blogged about some weeks ago, I managed to cross off my list in Thailand.

Going in October was definitely a plus point as that is their rainy season, [I never got wet once], was very quiet. The hotels and tourist spots weren't overcrowded and being near the equator I don't think I had a day where it was under 30 degrees. Needless to say I came back 3-4 shades darker, without being exposed to the sun that much and made sure I was never in the midday sun. I'm sure the cold of the English weather will diminish my lovely South East Asian tan though with a quickness...it always does.

I have no idea what my elephant's name was. I didn't even know if it was a male or a female. For some reason I'm going to take a wild guess and say it was female.

Now my elephant [let's just call it Nelly] was small in comparison to the other elephants I saw, but when I was on it, it was high up enough for me.

The chillin' chicken

I had to climb up in this tree house type of a structure where a chicken was chilling and a dog too, and climb onto the elephant. I was strapped in with a safety belt. Why on earth would I need a seat belt like contraption on an elephant?? I had visions of this elephant rising up on it's hind legs and throwing me off. That's when I got all Western and Hyacinth Bucket [that woman is so like my mother] and gripped on for dear life, trying to make sure the guide as well as the elephant didn't catch on that I was having a WTF moment and really wanted to say "screw the bucket list and everything on it. I want to go back and catch up on some sleep". But I didn't.

My goodness was Nelly slow. When it decided it wanted to chill and eat some leaves the guide got annoyed and started mumbling in Thai, kissing his teeth and commanding the elephant. When Nelly didn't respond he had some kind of hook on a stick and would drag the elephant along by the ear in the direction of where it wanted to go. That bit I honestly didn't like. I began to feel sorry for the elephant. Intelligent animals as they are to be able to understand and follow commands in any language, meant they probably understood a lot more too. I got the sense my elephant was quite sad, it really seemed that it was, and probably didn't like cavorting around tourists like me on a daily basis.

Nelly wandered through the thick bush of the Thai rainforest and proceeded to take huge football sized dumps as it went. Elephant dump after dump was littered along the pathways, but it didn't smell as bad as you would have expected.

You call that a dropping???

I got bitten about 5 times going through this forest and those bites itched like a mutha for the next 3 or so days. Luckily I had my Click It device that you zap a tiny electric shock to the bite causing it to stop itching. It worked as best as it could, but the way I was going needed a flippin 150,000 volt taser.

I am not even making this up, there were creatures in those bushes, behind trees, you name it they were there. If I saw a snake, or a monkey decided to drop out of the sky on my head it would have been all over. I got all Hyacinth Bucket again and fixed my face like she and my mother would, holding my backpack close to me and praying if anything jumped out, that Nelly wouldn't wild out throwing me off and leaving me in a pile of dung [how dramatic am I?] It didn't happen though..thank God! Whatever was in the bushes stayed in the bushes.

After my elephant ride was done, Nelly moved her trunk toward me, like it wanted to play. I can't and won't lie I was petrified. I don't like snakes or anything snake like and her trunk looked like one so I wasn't going to go there. Nelly actually looked quite sad that I didn't want to pet him/her. And I in turn actually felt quite bad.

This is a video I shot of 'Nelly' after the trek.

WOAH Lanta!!

Here ya go TJ...LOL

I have 36 minutes to type this up, as I just bought 60 minutes of time for 200 THB.

Well Bangkok is over for now...I have one more day in Asia's sin city toward the end of the week after I hit Kuala Lumpur. I am just beginning day 2 on the beautiful island of Koh Lanta. And for 30 pounds a night [no damn sterling symbol on these keyboards] I made a brilliant choice with this hotel. Anyone familiar with hotel chains and have heard of The Langham will know they aren't cheap. If at this precise time I stayed in London I'd be paying 263 pounds a night, and if I were in Boston I'd be paying 505 dollars a night, so you know I got a great deal for 3 nights at 30 pounds a night here. But don't let the price fool you, I am in paradise. Right now as I look above my computer screen [hold up, let me take a picture so when I am back home I will edit this post and add it.]

A picture taken of my view whilst blogging

I am looking at endless villas nestled in between thick greenery rising up on a small mountain. Palm trees, perfect flowers and plants, beautiful yellow butterflies, and the odd cascading waterfall. I actually forget I'm at a resort, you sometimes think this is Koh Lanta in itself, but as you step outside the complex you are greeted with REAL Koh Lanta. Tuk Tuks willing to take you wherever you want to go, shacks on the roadside selling food and drink and the off Food Mart or 7 Eleven. It's hardly built up [thank God] and I'm glad I ventured here over Phuket which is compared to being Bangkok on an island. No hookers here, just peaceful bliss. I think I am the only singleton here, but don't care. It's full of couples and families. And in all honesty it seems that typically what a lot of people do is remain in the complex, I'd be surprised to see anyone venture out. I for one am not going to be a typical English person on holiday, remain enclosed in the familiarity of the hotel grounds until my next flight.

Speaking of flights, it was 1 hour and 20 minutes from Bangkok to Krabi. I flew on Air Asia and the flight was dirt cheap around 35 pounds or so including taxes. These are the equivalent of low cost budget airlines. What I liked about it was they had a really good menu of hot food and drinks you could order from at a very low price, you sat wherever you pleased and they were extremely quick and efficient, something that the UK airlines could learn a lot from. It's not this organised back home. On top of that the crew were again overly gorgeous and very friendly. I love it when everywhere you go the put their hands together bow and welcome you "Sa-wat-dee Kah." I'm going to be going home permanently hunched over from all of the bowing I've been doing.

My plane from Bangkok to Krabi

I haven't been active yet, I'm trying to decide on what to do today, whether to visit the marine park or find out about that Elephant Trek. I'm in a high risk Tsunami area and when reading my Lonely Planet book this morning realised it's on this very coast the Tsunami hit a few years ago. I even dreamed there was a Tsunami here last night. YIKES!!! If it happens hanging onto a tree and hoping for the best!

I had an expensive hotel breakfast for 650 Baht this morning and no bloody way am I doing that again. I'm off to the cheap roadside for breakfast tomorrow. I've already had my fair share of the Bangkok Belly so I'm ready for anything else that may come my way, and at this point don't particularly care. My stomach seems to have built up a strong resistance, although you will need to bring tablets to aid in digestion, laxatives in case you can't go, re hydration salts in case you get diarrhoea or use laxatives to help you go and some tablets to stop the diarrhoea. Basically bring anything and everything to help with whatever #2 eventuality you may have and that's some real talk right there.

In Bangkok I saw foods I wouldn't touch with a barge pole being sold at the local market including cockroaches, maggots and baby birds [I got pictures! Click to enlarge].

If you look closely these are deep fried baby birds

Mealworms, or maggots...BARF!!!

The weekend market is called Chatuchak and is huge. I spent about 3 hours there just walking around and still didn't see everything. It's the place to haggle and barter and you can buy anything from live baby frogs to food to paintings to clothing. I picked up clothing, Thai silk scarves and pillow cases. Replica BAPE and Millionaire Boys Club T-shirts went for 100 THB which is about 1 pound 40 pence, and a 100% Thai silk scarf would set you back 80 THB just over 1 pound. I picked up 5 for 350 THB.

On the Island of Koh Lanta, I've seen many a muslin woman dressed from head to toe with only their eyes showing in the traditional Jilbaab riding motorcycles carrying small children on them. It's not uncommon for children and I'm talking 2 year old toddlers and sometimes younger riding on motorcycles with no protective clothing with their mothers and fathers. At the Muslim women in their Jilbaabs I couldn't do anything but laugh. That to me was an amusing sight.

Another thing I've noticed here, time goes very slowly. The slowest I've ever experienced anywhere in the world and it's not just a being on vacation thing either. I've only been here about 4 full days and I feel like I've been here about 2 weeks already. It's just past noon and it feels like it should be about 3pm. I'm really going to have to pace myself to make it through till about 8pm tonight because I could probably be tired by 5pm if I over do it.

Off to do something other than stay in the resort!!

A Different World

Being in Bangkok is definitely surreal to say the least. Oh my goodness where do I even begin.

Well the two flights over were pretty good. I flew on Gulf Air, and even though I had never even heard of it before, it was probably one of the best airlines I've ever flown on [comfort wise] to say the least. Although from Bahrain to Bangkok as we were heading down the runway to take off, we had to head back to the gate as an irate passenger in Business Class decided to throw a hissy fit because he was unhappy with his TV monitor. So off the plane he went at the request of the cabin crew and applause from the plane.

It's 6 hours ahead of London and it's been a very long time since I've been anywhere ahead of home time wise, but it feels like a whole day ahead more so than 6 hours.

I arrived at my hotel at 10am, and was lucky I didn't have to wait until 2pm to get a room because my flight was early. I was expecting to have to put my luggage in the hold area and wait around for a few hours. My hotel, Le Fenix is in the heart of Sukhumvit on Soi 11 and it's not a pretty city at all. Well not from what I've seen anyway. It looks kind of beat up and ghetto. It doesn't smell as bad as people make out, and like the tourists, locals, cats and dogs, cockroaches walk the streets too. I called out to the almighty Jesus when I spotted my first one on the street in the early hours of this morning. Jesus has heard a lot from me these past two days.

So after doing my usual taking pictures of the hotel room ritual to show Mrs H when I get back as she has a thing about hotels, I decided to take a shower and get some rest, after seeing if there were any English speaking channels on the TV and thank goodness there were. Even Oprah has her spot here on Thai TV. And speaking of the TV my goodness are the women beautiful. You won't find dark Thai women on TV here, they are all light and very bright. I really felt ugly within 30 minutes of landing, the ones that take care of themselves really do.

Pictures of my room @ Le Fenix in Sukhumvit taken by my fair Kodak V-whatever digital camera

Post shower I was exhausted, I ended up sleeping from noon right through to 8pm. I woke up to pitch darkness outside and the thumping bass from the nearby bars and clubs. Apparently I'm in one of the liveliest areas for nightlife, there's even a rooftop club on my [8th] floor called Nest. Haven't decided nor have a feel yet to see if I'm going to venture out to a club just yet, but I'll see. So I spent a little time deliberating as to whether I'd stay in and order room service or get up take another shower and venture outside. I was thinking it be better if I stay in and venture out in the morning then the common sense kicked in and told me to get up an go out. I didn't do 15 hours of travelling for no damn room service.

By the time I made myself feel beautiful again, I ventured out at 23:30 and walked the dark dank backstreets of Bangkok. I felt pretty safe as it goes. Always a tough girl who knows how to take care of herself, and my gut instinct told me these people were pretty harmless. I saw the odd tourist on my little walk [as well as the stray cat, dog and cockroach], as well as the old male or female [sleeping] security guard at the backs of the hotels. No matter what corner I turned there was always someone just sitting and securing a property. I spotted my first brotha [with his white woman] LOL. Now I don't know if he was staring hard because he'd seen a sistah or the fact that a sistah had seen a brotha with a white woman and felt guilty. Sistahs you know those looks.

Bangkok [Sukhumvit] area at night

So onto the main Sukhumvit Road I ventured and found something very similar to what I'd seen on Canal Street in New York. Silver jewelry, scarves, t-shirts, bootleg CD's and DVD's being sold. The same thing stall after stall. I even saw some candied cricket or locust, but definitely wasn't in the mood for that. Plenty of food stalls galore and was actually quite tempted, but thought let me just try somewhere a little safer first and let my stomach get used to being in a different country for at least 24 hours, as I'm not ready for the Bangkok Belly just yet. I passed by the Thai hookers. And let me tell you, these Thai hookers look just like the other regular Thai girls. They aren't dressed in a slutty way at all. And if they weren't just standing lined up on the street you'd never know who was a prostitute and who wasn't. I over heard a young French guy bartering with a beautiful street hooker.

"So how much" he asked.
"How much you got?'
"1,000 baht" he said.

I didn't stick around for the rest, but he was eager it seems to get some Thai poom poom for the night. I just laughed, the men that venture to these parts for sex are very sad indeed.

Part of the extras you can purchase in your room aside from the minibar in the room @ Le Fenix
It really remined you of what kind of a city you were in

Now you just know who is here for the sex and who isn't. Pretty much any man vacationing without his wife or girlfriend are interested in the Thai sex scene. In less than three hours I saw more old white men with young Thai women it wasn't even funny. Even here at the mall now, Miss rent a girlfriend, or the Thai mail order brides are in full effect. It's not uncommon for men to 'buy' a woman for the whole duration of his stay and act like the girlfriend catering to his every need [sexual and otherwise]. How sad do you have to be to rent a girl for a week or two?? Even the African prostitutes are down here also selling their stuff on the streets. Aside from a few brothas that I've seen out here the only black sistahs I've seen were hookers. They know better to think I'm one of them as I have my lil backpack, so definitely look like the typical tourist.

I ended up getting a dim sum special for 159 THB at around midnight at chokdee and was also glad to find out it stays open till 3am, which was pretty good. For the same thing in London would have been around 1200 THB. Everything here is pretty cheap. To buy an Iced Tea drink in a bottle at the local 7 Eleven cost me 18 THB [Around 30 pence] the same price roughly for a can of coke. I am so loving the cheapness of everything.

159 THB = £2.87
My first meal in Thailand which happened to be Chinese.

After my late dinner I ventured back around to Soi 13 to a massage place. Now it's not a seedy one. Thai people get massages like Americans and Brits go to the gym. A lot of these places close at midnight or are open 24 hours. If it's seedy like the Banana Bar near where I'm staying it will state 'For Men Only.' So I went to Lan Po and got a Thai massage for 1 hour at 1am. Now if you don't know, now you know...Thai massages are NOT relaxing. This petite Thai woman, stood on me, beat me, cracked me in places, I never knew existed, pulled me, stretched me. Put it this way I have never called on Jesus so much in my whole entire life. I was too through and realised it was only 1:05 and had 55 minutes of this to go. She massaged my neck Thai style so hard I really thought I was going to have a stroke, if not on the table, then in my sleep back at the hotel. She massaged my scalp my hair was ruined and even massaged the damn MAC make up OFF my face. It was lucky it was dark and late because for some Thai people Halloween really would have come early [although I didn't look that bad after she was through]. Everything was massaged except my stomach and my lady bits. Even my ass was manhandled I was like OK this is too much, but for them it's a massage, for a Westerner like me, it's bordering on assault and violation. I even had my earlobes and the insides of my ears massaged [insert weird face here].
At 2:05am she was through, and on more than one occasion had the nerve to say "you come again soon" I just did my smile and nod "yes, yes, I come back" Not a chance in hell. My pain threshold was really tested this morning and I am now ready for childbirth. I really am.

I wandered back to the hotel after stopping off at the 7 Eleven for a second time, and let me tell you, you think it's only black people on the whole light skinned thing? Asians are worse than us but over here it's accepted and encouraged. L'oreal, Garnier and Dove all cater to lightening products on TV and in the stores. It's that big in Asia. The fairer/whiter the better. I think even Lucy Lui would be considered too dark. Mrs H was telling me that her sister's Thai friend Nad is considered too dark by Thai standards and her own mother brings her back lightening and brightening creams from Thailand. You can't go anywhere without seeing them. Darker Thai models are not seen on the TV or in magazines. The only difference is the women that use these creams don't look disfigured like the black women do because theirs doesn't contain hydroquinone. From looking at the ingredients I have no idea what agent actually lightens their skin. Maybe it's the Titanium Dioxide, who knows.

I got accosted by a half Arab, half Thai guy in my elevator asking me to go for a drink with him after he finishes work. It was after 2am at this point and with the time plus the fact i clocked his wedding ring I politely declined. I know how some of those Arab men stay, even the Arab steward was smiling sweetly and about 2 inches from my face on the flight from Bahrain asking me where I was from as in Africa or the Carribean. I politely told him my parents are from Jamaica and left it at that. You can tell when people are just being friendly to when they are interested like you are some kind of fetish. I don't know what they have heard but this woman is not easy.

I had to force myself to sleep at 6 am and got up at 7:30 am this morning. I wasn't tired after an 8 hour sleep but knew I'd need a little nap to get me through to the next day.

Thai'm Ready!

This will be the first trip since I was a child where I'm actually going to get some sleep before I go. A little less than 5 hours, but sleep is sleep.

My bags are packed, and light as a feather I may add, and I'm just R-E-A-D-Y. I booked my last hotel this evening [a last night stay in Bangkok after Malaysia before heading back to London] and I'm just about ready to call it a day. The bubble bath is running and I'm getting ready to start reading my [been on the shelf for too long] E. Lynn Harris book 'Not A Day Goes By.' Thanks MzInspiredMind81. [In Purple just for you.]

I'm nervous, yet excited. I've travelled by myself before to Dallas 2 years ago, but this is the furthest I've been by myself for close to a 2 week period. The weather at the moment looks crap. It's rainy season so rain and thunderstorms galore, but still hot n humid in the 80-90 degree range. It doesn't matter though as I'm going to make the most of it, and come rain or shine take in as much as Thailand and Malaysia as humanly possible. Plus I'm being a real diva and staying at the fancy places like the Le Fenix, The Langham and The Ritz Carlton so that's an added bonus having a plush hotel to come back to after a day of just getting dirty like a backpacker.

I'll be blogging as I go. Internet cafés are rife in Southeast Asia so I won't have a problem getting access to the www. Plus as well as any pictures I take, it'll be the first where I'll be able to savour the memories of the who's, what's, where's, when's and how's of this trip right here.

So it's off to Bangkok, then Koh Lanta an island off the coast of Krabi, then Malaysia, back to Bangkok, then home to London via Bahrain.

S-H-I-T, I hope I don't oversleep. I'm setting 4 alarms!!

Cannot Wait

In 2 days time I'll be in Bangkok and this time next week, I'll be at this resort in Koh Lanta relaxing at The Langham. And 'by jove' [a very old English expression] I cannot wait. I don't even care if it's raining, it will still be beautiful.

London is cold, dreary and when wet is far from beautiful. All I know is I have 80-90 degree weather awaiting me, with some rain, but in that heat I seriously don't mind at all.

Hmmmm London or Thailand??

I know where I'd rather be.

The Bucket List: #12

My bucket list now has 22 items on it. And soon to be 23.

It's good to look through it and see what can be crossed off. I wonder how long it's actually going to take me to do it.

My flights are now booked for Koh Lanta, Krabi and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This morning Malaysia wasn't even on my mind. I just looked a a map of Thailand when I was at work online and said I want to go to Malaysia and lo and behold a few hours after that, flight is booked and sometimes that's just how it should be. Spontaneity is sometimes like a drug. [I have never used drugs BTW] but I'm guessing it feels somewhat close to that. I am really looking forward to travelling to South East Asia by myself. Like I've said before if I waited on a friend or family member to be free and have the money to go, do you think anything would have even been booked for now? I highly doubt it. There is so much to see and do that I don't even want anyone bothering me. I just want to get on and do it. I'm looking forward to meeting new people and doing new things and embracing being a singleton on holiday.

**Pumps fist in the air for all those independent singletons**

It surely is nothing to be embarrassed about or even ashamed. In fact most times I love it. Peace and quiet and to come and go as I please. No big baby of a boyfriend wanting to know what time I'll be back or wondering when can we spend some time together as he hasn't seen me all week because of work. I want to marry and have kids, and I can wait, I'm not in a hurry hurry [yes I said it twice]. I'm taking my time and enjoying the scenery figuratively and literally....which leads me onto the next bucket list entry I am going to conquer.

#12 Ride on an Elephant

I used old faithful aka Google and typed in Koh Lanta + elephant and listed at #3 was Sumate Koh Lanta Yai Safari.

ABSOLUTELY PERFECT!! Right there on the island, and they have 5 different elephant programs to choose from. Just last week I was dreaming about trekking through the Thai rainforest on an elephant and on #3 of their programs is the perfect elephant trek for me which consists of:

  • Elephant riding for one hour at Pha-ae Camp, set in lush tropical rainforest.
  • Visit the Sean Gypsy Village(Baan Sang Ga U).
  • Enjoy lunch and stunning view at (Baan Sang Ga U)
  • Jungle walk to waterfall.
  • Visit Lanta National Park.
  • Watch and participate in the baby elephants show.
And now it seems it will become a reality. I thought about doing the one where you get in the Kayak, but I don't know what is in that water and if I see a water snake, let's just put it this way

MY HEART WILL STOP AND I WILL DIE BEFORE THE DAMN BUCKET LIST IS EVEN COMPLETE!

The rainforest trek sounds perfect. I have no desire to see a cave, but I do want to see more stunning views of Thailand.

My sister was in Thailand a few weeks back and rode on an elephant in Koh Samui. She said it was a bizarre yet amazing experience.

I cannot wait to go for a trek with Nelly or Dumbo or whatever it is called. But if I witness an elephant going poo or wee I will have a silent fit.

Throw Malaysia in the Mix & Call It a Day!

Maybe leaving a majority of booking everything till the last minute was supposed to happen for a reason.

I was looking at a map of Thailand online this morning and noticed just how close the distance was to Malaysia. Now in the far east Malaysia is definitely on my list of places to go in the world. So I decided about 20 minutes ago, to just go. Do a 2 in 1. And why not?

So I went onto Air Asia and checked out the prices to all of my domestic flights just to see if they had gone up some, as there has been financial crisis, after financial crisis and for all I knew since I last checked back in July, did the airline even exist anymore? Hey stranger things have happened in recent weeks.

So once I hit Bangkok and stay there for 3 nights, I'm flying to Krabi and travelling to Koh Lanta by road and sea.

I'm going to switch it up from here and travel from Krabi to Kuala Lumpur and from Kuala Lumpur back to Bangkok to spend the last night there before catching my early flight back to London via Bahrain.

It was lucky I was sitting down because I'm used to cheap flights to Europe for a penny plus tax, but still I was amazed at the one way price from Kuala Lumpur back to Bangkok [the longest leg at that] £12 ($21)

EXCUSE ME!!

It costs £8 at peak time to get a one day travel card to zone 1 in London. So for £4 more my black ass can fly from Malaysia back to Thailand. Shoot you don't have to tell me twice.

SOLD TO THE LEGGY SISTAH IN THE BACK WITH A PENCHANT FOR TRAVELLING!!

Now I have to order a Lonely Planet guide for Malaysia and see what I want to do whilst I'm there.

Excited is not even the word.

2 Hotels Booked. 2 To Go

Oh my goodness I'm so glad I did 1 more last minute search on Bangkok hotels, because I had IMM Fusion down as my choice until I came across this bad ass hotel called Le Fenix. And I got 3 nights for approximately 5,827 THB (£95) not per night. Total stay!!! OMG I am so psyched.

Le Fenix, Bangkok

(l-r) Exterior of Le Fenix Hotel with L Shaped windows, Lobby, Flow Bar

I have no energy to book the 2 other hotels and domestic flight so will leave those till tomorrow.

(l-r) Guest Room, Roof Top Lounge

I already have The Langham booked for Koh Lanta and considering the Boston Langham is $505 per night and the London hotel £263 a night during the same time I'll be staying there, the Thai one I booked on special for £90 for 3 nights.

**FAINTS**

Langham Place Eco Resort + Spa, Koh Lanta, Krabi

(l-r) Wave Bar, Main Pool, Mountain Top Pool

Who said you need to experience Thailand by back packing and back packing alone? I'm sorry I have no problem getting dirty by day, but you best believe I need a pool and spa afterwards. And on top of that, I can experience just as much as the smelly back packing traveller. Shoot if I ride an elephant and you ride an elephant in Thailand aren't we sharing the same experience and seeing the same beautiful countryside? The only difference I'll be laying my head down at night in a 4 star hotel rather than a hut or shared dorm. I know I sound so snobbish, but I've had it up to here of people telling me that by staying in nice hotels in Thailand I'm not going to experience it fully. We'll see about that.

Thai Need To Pull My Finger Out!

I went to bed last night pissed at my self just a little, because I'm slightly less organised than I should be.

I bought a Lonely Planet book on Thailand for £16.99 in July then took it back the next day as I saw it on Amazon for £7.99, I didn't buy it until today on Amazon. I've only booked 1 hotel out of 4 for my trip, the same day I paid for the flight, even though I don't even have to have my hotel sorted until I land in Bangkok, it's not the point, I'm too organised for that last minute dot com BS. I haven't booked my domestic flight from Bangkok to where ever the hell I'm going, nor looked into the areas to go elephant riding.

To some, this is nothing. For me this is against the law. Had my flight booked since July and coming up to October apart from the one hotel booked, that's it??? Oh yeah I did get vaccinated 2 weeks ago, so that accounts for something I suppose.

I need to get organised as I cannot stand leaving things that can be done in a matter of minutes. That's procrastination at it's worst.
