If I Were A Boy - BC Jean
If I Were A Boy - Beyoncé
So there's me loving Bey's new track that I blogged about last week, as it's on the edgy side of what I usually love listening to, only to find out the original writer and singer is a 21 year old Californian artist called BC Jean.
Whether it was a sold demo or stolen by Beyoncé's camp, it's not yet known or even confirmed.
I love the song but I love BC's version better. She's raspy and not vocal perfection like Beyoncé, which adds to the realness of the whole track in my opinion.
I'm really not a fan of artists singing songs written for them or by somebody else. As much as I can admire the talent of power vocalists like Celine Dione and Whitney Houston, I'm less impressed when the likes of David Foster and Diane Warren were penning hits for them, whilst Mariah slugs her guts out in the studio writing, producing and arranging her own tracks and had been since she was a teenager.
This is great publicity for BC Jean, as she's gained popularity and notoriety from the publicity from this one single. I'm now a new fan and her sound is pretty much what I'm into, I'll be seriously looking into downloading some of her stuff (legally).
Regardless of who you think sang it better. There is no denying BC Jean's songwriting talent.
